One of the largest packaging suppliers in the world is Sonoco Products. They are the third largest paper producer in the United States and the eight largest in the world. Paper is the most widely used item in packaging material beside plastic.
To make paper many forests were cut down to make the pulp that is the precursor to paper. Through the use of recycling, further deforestation can be eliminated.

The Dogwood Alliance works with packaging suppliers and paper producers with the intent of curbing unsustainable deforesting practices in the southern United States. The forests of the southern US have the most biodiversity in all of North America as well as the largest freshwater ecosystem in the world. It is also the largest paper producing region in the world, with most forests under private ownership. The Dogwood Alliance attempts to convince these companies to use recycled materials instead of increasing deforestation.

Packaging suppliers often produce packages for many different companies. This can help many smaller companies out because of the high cost of packaging equipment and the difficulty of finding raw supplies in a suitable amount. They often can produce packaging in many different types of materials and designs to meet whatever needs a company and its products have.
