Blister Packaging
Blister packaging consists of pre-formed plastic material
in combination with either a paper or foil backing to hold smaller consumer
goods, or for sterile medical goods. The formed plastic holds the product,
often a pill, and the foil seals and protects it. They allow many items
to be included and individually used with no loss of freshness to the
other items.
The most common blister packaging is used for pharmaceutical caplets
or pills. Using a blister pack, or blister strip as they are also called
ensures that each pill remains fresh until use, and is not tampered
with. Calendars can also be printed on the back of the pack, for drugs
that require ingestion on certain days such as many birth control drugs.
Blister packaging is also used on many other consumer goods, such as
toys, tools, and electrical items. Generally the backing for these is
cardboard, and they are not sealed from the air, but are protected from
theft or use. Products that contain multiple parts are often put into
blister packs so pieces are not lost. The consumer can easily examine
the product which is often able to hang on a peg as well as be easily
opened.
